As reported in this storyText Messages Save Fire Department Thousands many government departments and companies are coming to the realisation that sending text messages to existing mobile phones is a better and cheaper alternative to having staff carry a phone and a pager.
Pagers have been traditionally used as a way of comminicating short pieces of information to people either on the move or who are off-duty.
Typically messages are used top get the pager carrier to then phone a call service to pick up the message or take some other action.
Of course there is the cost of the pager unit lease and the message, plus the need to carry an extra device.
Like Taylor’s Fire Department have discovered, sending a text message is more convenient and saves money. Plus text messaging works with even the most basic handset.
Many txt message service providers have the capacity to set up distribution lists based on shift, whole of staff or send to one recipient only. This can be achieved either from a web interface, from Outlook or even from a standard mobile phone handset.
