Moving toward free mobile calls

Posted by MattE on 05 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: SMS

It seems not that many years ago, when phone calls from mobile phones were short, not just because of the price, but because the handsets were so heavy it was impossible to hold a conversation longer than a few minutes.

While there is much talk of the electronic economy, mostly this is related to the internet (AKA data traffic) and the WWW (AKA ecommerce). But of course there is that other, perhaps more subtle digital economy and that is the mobile economy.

For years we have been hampered by high mobile phone call costs, high mobile data charges and poor profit share from premium SMS services . This has combined to limit mobiles as an integral part of the digital economy.

What I cannot get over is that it rang more than once.

AMTA asks this question
What do you do with a judge whose phone goes off in court? And what if the judge is the Acting Chief Justice of Australia?

Mobile phone becoming journalist’s reporting equipment

Posted by MattE on 25 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: SMS

If you are looking at where the humble mobile phone is going, this story from AMTA is worth looking at. Seems the modern journalist will be able to go places and do things with an element of subterfuge as they won’t have to lug around lots of equipment…

Journalists use their “mojo” to find new ways of storytelling

Reuters news agency in London has equipped its journalists with a mobile journalism toolkit about a year ago. Reuters’ product manager of mobile and emerging media, Ilicco Elia, says this is the start of a future form of journalism and a new way to tell stories.  In fact, the BBC’s technology editor, Darren Waters, has been filing mojo (mobile journalist) reports from various parts of Europe since late last year, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Are Telstra email help desk staff trained by PayPal??

Posted by MattE on 23 Jul 2008 | Tagged as: SMS, consumer engagement

If you have ever had the misfortune to deal with PayPal, you will know what a frustrating time it can be. Response after response that does not deal with your question.

Sadly I have had the same experience with the Telstra email help desk.

This was my question “Can you please provide me with a direct contact number for someone who can talk to me about commercial opportunities with the new Quick Codes. (These are bar codes that can be scanned by new Telstra phones - a VERY useful and exciting prospect - I have been trying to get other suppliers of this style of technology to get it auto installed on Nokia phones ex factory, to no avail…..)

More mobile phones than people in Australia

Posted by MattE on 02 May 2008 | Tagged as: SMS

AMTA reports - Number of mobile phones now exceeds Australia’s population

For the first time there is now more than one mobile service for every Australian, with 21.26 million mobile phone services in operation at 30 June 2007, a 7.6 per cent increase from 19.76 million the year before, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority Communications Report 2006-07, released today.

A significant increase in 3G mobile customer numbers helped drive that growth, which was in contrast to a small but continued decline in fixed-phone services over the last financial year.

‘There are now more than 4.5 million 3G mobile services in Australia, a 192 per cent increase between 30 June 2006 and 30 June 2007,’ said Chris Chapman, ACMA Chairman.

Posted by MattE on 29 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: SMS

It seems we are a generally happy lot when it comes to our mobile phone service. Now, if they can just get non-metro areas coverage sorted out.

A new survey undertaken by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has highlighted consumer perceptions of mobile phone services and the important part they play in the lives of the community. ACMA’s work reflects AMTA’s own research and points to an exciting year of growth in 2008, particularly in data use and mobile broadband.

Happy 21st mobile phones in Australia!

Posted by MattE on 22 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: SMS

Did you have an early mobile phone. You know, the ones that limited you to a three minute call, not because of the cost, which was pretty high, but because the things were so darned heavy!

I rememember in 1988 seeing a Japanese businessman with one - it was a large thing in a bag that was slung over his shoulder and the handset was joined to it by a coiled lead like on todays landline phones.

Mobile phones have changed our lives almost as much as the internet.
