Some good advice on making blog entries

Posted by MattE on 09 Jul 2007 | Tagged as: Communications, Web

I was reading Matt Cutts blog (something I get around to every few weeks) and saw a rather nifty post on company blogging.

Its all about what to write and what not to write on a company blog. Of course company blogs are an odd beast…needing to be both representative of the business, but also having the personality of the writer. However while he tries to link it to a controversial blog entry made by a Google blogger, most of his discussion is not related to company blogging at all. But the advice is good for all bloggers.

So these are the main points Matt makes in his blog post in bold. See his blog for his own expanded thoughts) and my notes after:

The easiest time to make a blogging gaffe is when you’re starting out - this is like anything new. Slow and steady till you find your feet. There is nothing more dis-spiriting than getting negative feedback on your intial forays.

Do Not Call Register - statistics

Posted by MattE on 04 May 2007 | Tagged as: Communications

I am in the process of discovering statistics for uptake of the do not call register.

Having failed to have a phone call to the ACMA media man, I explored the rest of the website.

The register must be run by machines, as there are no contact details on the site - just a web form. I have submitted this form with my request. I will hopefully bring you news as they respond:

Do Not Call registry opens in Australia

Posted by MattE on 03 May 2007 | Tagged as: Communications, consumer engagement

At last Australia’s Do Not Call registry has opened in Australia.

Hopefully this will severely curtail annoying telemarketers who call at inopportune times (for me any time).

Sadly there are some exemptions:

Politicians - Why? They have traditional media channels to communicate their vews

Use of SMS could have saved VT lives

Posted by MattE on 21 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: Communications, SMS

The use of an SMS warning sent to all on campus could have saved lives in the Virginia Tech massacre. Instead email was used which had far less reach and less timeliness.

The use of an email warning was also used in today’s shooting at the NASA Space Center. In this incident, staff were also notified of the situation via email.

The problem with email is it requires the recipient to be at their computer at the time. In the case of VT, those at risk were unlikely to have been online at the time.

How to write numbers on web pages

Posted by MattE on 17 Apr 2007 | Tagged as: Communications, Web

I was interested to read Jakob Nielsen’s Alertbox about writing numbers for the web.

Normally I am one for resisting changes to convention, it takes a bit of effort to wrap my mind around some things, but along with other ‘new conventions’ when it comes to the web, such as use of bullet points, bolding text, plenty of subheadings etc, writing all numbers as numbers seems pretty logical.

Nielsen says that eyetracking studies have shown that numbers are attractants and stoppers of wandering eyes.

Among our discoveries was that numerals often stop the wandering eye and attract fixations, even when they’re embedded within a mass of words that users otherwise ignore.

Dove and creating lifelong links with consumers

Posted by MattE on 20 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Communications, Marketing

In a recent post, the move by companies to market to consumers in ways other than promoting the product directly was examined. Instead companies are creating a community/trust relationship with consumers in a push towards a “new loyalty”.

Here is another example - Dove Self Esteem Fund. Not only does Dove work to creating and maintaining relationships with women of an age who are, perhaps since puberty, becoming concerned at the appearance of their skin, but also the daughters of those women.

The site has three main areas:

Mobile phones become key tool for health workers

Posted by MattE on 18 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Communications, SMS

The lack of effective internet and land line telephony services in African countries may have led to a new development being launched that will allow effective communications between health field staff and health authorities.

Mobile communications is expanding rapidly in most African countries and provides the fastest way to provide telecommunications in places where running copper or optic fibre cable is unfeasible or too costly in current economic conditions. Sixty percent of the population in developing African countries now live in areas with mobile coverage, with 85 percent expected to be in a coverage footprint by 2010.

It is intriguing, however, as to why this has only just been implemented when the data input technology has been available for a number of years. I guess the answer is politics.

Posted by MattE on 02 Feb 2007 | Tagged as: Communications, Marketing, Media

Good news for Australian households and businesses plagued with telemarketing calls. The Australian Do Not Call Register is expected to be operational by May 2007 according to a release by the Australian Telecommunications and Media Authority.

The register has been keenly anticipated by many Australians who can receive up to 10 telemarketing call a day.

One area not clearly explained is who ‘exempted marketers’ will be. Charity’s may be included, who in our office account for up to half of telemarketing calls received. Continue Reading»
