Will SMS feature in the Australian election campaign?

While the use of SMS was widely noted in the USA electoral campaign, it will be interesting to see what use is made by political parties and indeed down to the candidate level here in Australia.
I have an expectation that Labor will be more proactive in the use of what is still regarded as fringe media, as well as using social media.
As the election pace picks up, there is the ideal opportunity to deliver targeted messages to the party faithful.
I doubt however, indeed I hope, that they do not use rental lists for broadcasting messages as this in my view will ultimately backfire badly.
It is one thing, as a person who has joined some form of online survey or other means that people’s details are gathered, to receive a text message that delivers some form of value via a coupon or valuable information. I think that some political message would be very unwelcome.
However there are still great opportunities for its use within the party failthful, in the form of meeting notifications, information dissemnination, seeking feedback on elements of the campaign etc.
Another method of involvement is to encourage people to opt in to receive information. For many, a short message on their phone is preferrable to the often not so accessible social media relm and of course email is now so flooded with junk that getting the message through is far from assured.
Of course we can assist anyone wanting to make use of SMS to increase their communication reach – political or otherwise. Just give us a call 0409 349 752
On the social meid front, here is an early anlysis on the use of social media by the two leaders and here is an even more detailed election 2010 social media analysis including charts and figures
