ABC radio has this story that will be of interest to those heading to the NSW ski fields in their own vehicles:

The State Government has turned to wireless technology to promote road safety during the New South Wales Snowy Mountains ski season.

Motorists can now access the latest snow and road information on mobile phones, at blue-tooth kiosks at Perisher Valley.

The Emergency Services Minister, Steve Whan, says it is an innovative approach, which will allow police to easily monitor the effectiveness of the campaign.

Mr Whan says increasing the awareness of road safety in icy conditions is a priority.

“At this time of year, we bring a lot of extra police resources in so that we do make sure that we’ve got a big, strong presence on the Monaro Highway and the Kosciuszko Road heading towards the ski fields” he said.

“Now that’s important, but it’s more important that people take care, that they are aware of the conditions.”

We suggest the trial could be expanded to include the ability for drivers to text a keyword so that people within phone coverage could get updates even while on the move or away from the bluetooth kiosks.
