SMS – drive sales, but ensure your list is compliant

SMS is a very effective tool for communicating with your customer and prospects lists. A well-crafted message, with a good offer can drive footfall to your store or website.

SMS marketing systems can be used for:
• Updates
• Alerts
• Promotional messages
• Reminders
• Confirmations
• Mobile web links
It is important to make sure, however, that your lists are compliant with the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s requirements.
One of these is that the person receiving the message must have opted in to your list. There are a number of strategies that can be used to comply with this.
There have been some high profile cases of major brands and/or their advertising agencies being fined for sending SMS without an opt-out system. To be properly SPAM compliant every electronic message must follow these rules.
1. The message must contain a method to opt-out within the message.
While a simple reply mechanism will suffice, better still is a system that automatically removes the person from the list
2. You must have consent to send SMS messages to a person.
While there are a number of t=strategies that can assist, one of the easiest ways is to make use on an online form that allows easy joining.
3. You must identify yourself within the message
You must identify your company or brand name within the message and also it is courteous to qualify the recipient as to why they have received the message.
