With the effects of the global slowdown starting to be felt here in Australia, many businesses, both large and small are reviewing costs in order to maintain profitability.
Cuts to expenditure can occur at many levels and are often influenced by sales volume and demand.
One of the first areas to be cost is staff numbers. Lower production/sales means less people are needed in the business, so numbers are trimmed.

Like many households, we had our carpet cleaning contractor visit our house last week for our periodic carpet cleaning.
After he had finished I asked him how business was going, what with the economic slowdown and stories of slower spending.
It turns out that the carpet cleaning business has indeed slowed, and as part of this cash flow has become increasingly important. Like many small businesses, this guy did not regard himself as a quasi-bank to carry other people’s debts.
The normal system used by the contractor is to write out a Tax Invoice and wait for payment, or accept a cheque and still wait for payment.
