Why an affiliate program program is not advertising

29 May 2008 | : Media

I have written here before on the topic of online merchants and their perception of the role of affiliates.

Even today, I received an email from a large insurance group with the subject line “Advertising Enquiry” and the body of the email talked about inviting me to join their pay-per-sale affiliate program.

Advertising is about creating awareness. It is about branding. It is about getting your logo seen.

Sadly all too many merchants think that doing this will induce people to click on these graphic ads and follow-through and make a purchase.

Grokdotcom reports on the Top 10 Online Retailers by Conversion Rate: April 2008

Must admit the benchmarks are pretty interesting – especially for we mere mortals who see so many people leave our site in the first 30 seconds – the benchmark 600+ seconds is something to aspire to.

Of interest, and a statistic that mirrors the data for our sites in the 15% natural search traffic. This shows that other methods of gaining traffic do work and that a sudden slip in the SERPs may not spell utter doom.

CompareOffice explodes onto Aussie market

15 May 2008 | : Marketing

A short time ago we undertook a review of the Microsoft Office alternative called CompareOffice.

We were pretty impressed – the functionality was equal, and the intuitiveness of the menu navigation was very good, although some functions were in different menus, but hey, it is not designed to be a clone.

So how does the market view this upstart software product that is challenging Mr Gate’s grip on software?

Pretty damned good if retail surveys are any good.

Windows on verge of collapse

07 May 2008 | : Web

This is an interesting read…

Windows on verge of collapse, says Gartner
Reports are emerging that according to a Gartner analysis, albeit a controversial one, Windows is on the verge of collapse. The conclusion being that unless something is done soon then it is only a matter of time before a competitor that is more able to tackle the problems it has faced will emerge and dethrone the OS King.

The analysis, carried out for Gartner by Michael Silver and Neil MacDonald, included a survey which asked if Microsoft needed to radically alter its approach to Windows to stay viable. Of the assorted IT managers and executives questioned, half apparently raised their hands.

I must admit I had been planning on a new computer and putting XP on it before XP fell into non-availability…but Vista’s problems seem to have forced Microsoft into extending its availability till 2010.

More mobile phones than people in Australia

02 May 2008 | : SMS

AMTA reports – Number of mobile phones now exceeds Australia’s population

For the first time there is now more than one mobile service for every Australian, with 21.26 million mobile phone services in operation at 30 June 2007, a 7.6 per cent increase from 19.76 million the year before, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority Communications Report 2006-07, released today.

A significant increase in 3G mobile customer numbers helped drive that growth, which was in contrast to a small but continued decline in fixed-phone services over the last financial year.

‘There are now more than 4.5 million 3G mobile services in Australia, a 192 per cent increase between 30 June 2006 and 30 June 2007,’ said Chris Chapman, ACMA Chairman.
