Some exciting news this week for Australian companies wanting to make wider use of SMS as a rapid response tool.

A six month trial is starting that will see a limited number of companies be able to have their 1300 numbers text enabled.

An industry pilot allowing consumers to send SMS
messages to a limited number of corporate local-rate (13/1300) numbers is about to commence under the auspices of Communications Alliance.

While 1300 numbers are limited to voice calls, the new initiative will allow SMS to also be received.

This will open up a whole new short code market without the expense of obtaining a costly 19 premium number which is expensive for both the business and the message sender.

It will also allow more easily remembered numbers by using the numeric/alpha combinations that are emerging as more popular my marketing savvy businesses.

The release also said that “The SMS response initiates a range of possibilities, from a simple brochure mail-out, through consultant/call centre call-back time booking and, most significantly, access to relevant mobile content or commerce sites through clicking into the relevant WAP-site from WAP enabled services.”

This style of service is widely used in Europe.

The trial is set to start this month with a limited number of providers, with an expanded roll-out in June.
