Mobile phone users need to be aware that calls and other telecommunications charges might be made to their phone during periods when their SIM is reporting an error on their phone.

We had this occur to us when one of our phones reported a SIM card read error. Naturally we could not use the phone, even though a call to Telstra had them claiming that noting seemed wrong. You can imagine our surprise when our bill showed charges of $600 racked up over the 2 days till we could get the SIM replaced!

Who ever had access when on a spree, subscribing to Foxtel mobile service, subscribing to a ringtone service, downloading megabyte and megabyte of mobile content, etc.

How could this happen? The person at Telstra who took my call did not know – said it might have been operator error somewhere when another person’s service was being connected, a typing error on the SIM number…but I suspect a hack job. This person when flat out to get as much content as possible.

Now here is the dumb part if it was a hack job – they sent SMS and made phone calls. So it would not be hard to discover who they called and backtrack it.

The good part is Telstra is not making us pay for this.

Anyone else had a similar experience?
