In my reading around the forums, I came across a thread dealing with MySpace. While I had read a bit on MySpace a while ago, this thread captured my attention.

From my previous brief look at MySpace, it seemed like a teen zone, tens of thousands of ‘Spaces’ with garish layouts and themes - so bad in fact that many are barely legible.

But this thread was about people using MySpace to market their websites, services and products. Now a caveat here: MySpace terms and conditions say business promotion is not allowed on MySpace…but there are plenty there doing it, in what could be termed a grey zone.

Certainly the whole setup is designed for people to meet people, with a weighting towards what sort of ‘interaction’ you would like to have with new ‘friends‘. Hmmm some of this might be lending itself to business promotion, given some of the images being posted. Surely there cannot be that many beautiful people out there…

So this thread spoke about people’s success in access new client bases. Enough people had posted on the thread that they were starting to see some success, and I read the MySpace has a user base of 22 million with around 150,000 new members per day. I thought, why not!

So I have set up my own Space.

The trick to marketing on it seems, is attracting as many ‘friends’ as possible. This allows you to post bulletins to them to let them know you have made a new blog post (MySpace has its own internal blog system, plus IM, internal email etc), make silly comments on other people’s spaces (you wouldn’t believe some of the crap that’s posted :( ).

My usage of MySpace is to promote the caricature business. I can put some fun caricatures on the Space and take a tangential view of life with some mentions of the caricature business sprinkled around.

My next task is to get new friends. There is a new offering in the marketplace from SpaceHog that promises to show you how to Make Money With MySpace.

With 22 million users, the guys, Mr Black and Mr Blue (heh heh yes they are caricature clients - click the link above to see them on the site doing their stuff - an innovative use of caricatures!) say they can make your MySpace a marketing success.
So far things are in the gearing up stage. I’ll let you know how I get on!

If you are making money or finding marketing sucess with MySpace why not let us know via comments.
