Take control and give it a go – thoughts against why it cannot be done

On one of the many forums I participate in, there was a post from a guy bemoaning the fact that if he earned too much from Adsense it would affect his pension, so he was taking his ads off to keep under the limit.
A while back I wrote a post on responsibility. Taking the future in your hands and having a go. It was about young people, but this guy is not young. He has been around. He should know the deal that life is about taking control and not surrendering to anything.
To stop short when you have at your disposal the best tool ever created – the internet – to recreate your life, to build an empire if you wish, just because of some pension is beyond me.
It is not hard to learn how to build a website. It is not hard to put the work into identifying a market niche to capitalise. It is not hard to put in the equivalent of full time hours and to reach a stage of earning as much or even much more than most people make at regular jobs. Heck, you can do this with affiliate programs alone with perseverance and dedication.
You can, of course build your business on a different model and it is worth reading some of our webmaster interviews to see how some people are doing it. Affiliate, drop ship or buy and resell – choose your method but read and learn.
And be prepared for some of the benefits (like working in your pyjamas all day if you want to) and also some of the downside – like being more socially isolated than in a regular job situation (though it ain’t all bad, let me say!!).
So to those who think they need to be held back because of losing pension entitlements or other financial or personal reasons – the sky is the limit. You can start a business on the web for under $100 (or nil using free web hosts – but if you are serious you don’t use them) and within 12-18 months be earning real money.

Dear Matt,
You mentioned in your recent post “It is not hard to put the work into identifying a market niche to capitalise” I was wondering if you could give me some tips on doing this. Is there a particular process you go through? Could you send me some links or something you have written before? I am also happy for you to email me f.schebesta at freestylemedia.com.au
Fred – the easiest way is to do a search on your favourite search engine for “finding internet niche markets” or “find niche markets online”.
The results will yield plenty of reading for you. Some of the advise is so general to be useless, but some is great.
The important thing, having identified a niche, There are two aspects
1. you have to be able to generate good content on it
2. There has to be something you sell, or find a supplier of products that have a good profit margin
So if you find the niche is in Pug dogs, then can you generate good content and then is there a sufficient product base that you can make some money from. Sometime affiliate programs are the best way to go. Most ecommerce stores do not market themselves very well. This is where your skills come in.
Hope this helps point you in the right direction.
Dear Matt,
Thanks for the advice I had a crack at that with the Google thing although I got pretty wacked with some generic information. I was wondering if you had some tasty sites that you learnt a lot from?
Have you got any examples of affiliate sites that you have setup?
Try adjusting your search terms – its all there. I don’t have a bookmark list if that is what you mean. A 5 second scan of each page you click through to will soon tell you if it is worth reading the whole lot.
See links to right for some of my sites.
