For quite some time an industry colleague has been on my back about getting Skype – a program that allows telephony between computers running the same software.

“It’s wonderful” she kept telling me. But I could not get my headset to work so I put it off until we had a computer upgrade in the office (not a task for the feint-hearted!).

So anyway – I downloaded and installed Skype; a simple task, and have had a fiddle with it. First I called a contact in China – worked great. Just today I had a great conversation with Yaro at Entrereneurs Journey.

Part of what Yaro and I discussed was the ability to create local numbers in the USA so that if you had a number in New York, someone could call that number from their landline phone and talk to you here in Australia for the price of a local call. What a neat way to create a pseudo office in New York I said. Already doing it, said Yaro – in his Canadian accent.

You can also use Skype to call landlines anywhere in the world. The rates are sort of cheap, but you can often do better with landline over-ride services. Of course if the other person has Skype on their computer, then its only bandwidth which, unless you have limitations on your account, means it’s free.

Now for my industry colleague who first pointed me to Skype – I’m just waiting for her to remember her ID!
